Is Douching Healthy?
Douching is a process of rinsing or washing the vagina by forcing water up into the vaginal cavity. Douches are available OTC and come in a variety of flavors. Some are perfumed, have saline in them, and other can even be prescription based depending on a woman flora. Douching used to be very popular among women in North America and Europe. Marketers are to blame for the many myths and mis concepts of douching. Women were constantly told to clean their vaginal cavities out after their menstrual cycles were relieved in order to remain clean. This was taught in schools as well as advertised all over televisions, in magazines, and was recommended by their primary care givers. Recently the myth of being clean from a douche has been busted, yet douches are used by millions of women everyday. All women should avoid douching, especially those that are pregnant. Douching is one of the worst things a woman can do for her delicate balance of vaginal flora.
Douching can introduce new bacteria into the vagina which can spread through the fallopian tubes cervix, and uterus. Researchers found that women who douche regularly experience more irritation and infections such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and an increased number of sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, regular users of vaginal douches face a significantly increased risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease which can have serious negative effects on pregnancy including infections in the baby, labor problems, and premature birth. For these reasons irrigation of the vagina is not recommended as a safe and healthy for the routine cleaning of the vagina. The only safe way to have a clean and healthy vagina it to let it clean itself. The delicate chemical balance in the vagina can easily be disrupted by routine vaginal douches.
Naturally mucous secretions keeps the vagina clean and healthy. Even feminine soaps and sprays are not recommended. These irritate the sensitive tissues of the outer regions. If there is discomfort or a foul odor coming from the vagina, it is essential to see a doctor, however never ever douche before the visit. Also avoid any sexual contact. This will only further disrupt the cultures and a proper diagnoses will not be viable. Most infections and odors are easily treated by simply bringing the flora back in balance. To conclude, it is a fact that douches are the wrong way to keep a healthy vagina in tact. The beauty of having a vagina is it is a self cleaning orifice!
